The meaningful ways to commemorate World Ocean Day on 8 June this year.

World Oceans Day is a global celebration held on the 8th of June each year, dedicated to honouring and protecting our oceans. It is essential to recognise the vital role that oceans play in our lives and take action to preserve their beauty and biodiversity. Here are some of the wonderful ways to celebrate World Ocean Day this year.

Beach Cleanup
According to UNESCO, plastic waste makes up 80% of all marine pollution with approximately 8-10 million metric tonnes of plastic ending up in the ocean each year. Since beaches are gateways to the ocean, they often suffer from plastic and waste pollution. Reach out to local environmental organisations such as Singapore’s National Environment Agency to join their beach cleanup events. Remember to equip yourselves with gloves, reusable bags, and garbage bins as you spend the day helping to collect litter, sorting recyclables, and raising awareness about the importance of keeping our beaches clean.

Get Informed
Many events are happening on World Ocean Day in hopes of raising awareness on the importance of saving our oceans. Whether it’s participating in virtual events such as the ones organised by the United Nations or attending a physical local event (hint: you can check out an event map here), there’s no better time to keep get informed on the latest trends, news and supporting organisations or activists that are making a difference in putting our ocean as a priority.

Support Ocean-Friendly Businesses
Use your purchasing power to support businesses that prioritise ocean-friendly practices. Look for sustainable seafood options certified by organisations like the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) or the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC). Other than that, opt for eco-friendly personal care products that do not contain harmful chemicals or non-biodegradable packaging.
