Every 24 October, we celebrate what the planet has given and how we can give back in this environmental movement against climate change.

It’s clear that there’s an urgent need to decarbonise and climate change has brought upon many negative effects such as global warming. Seeing as how environmental specialists celebrate International Day of Climate Action every 24 October, here are some quick ways you can contribute to saving the earth.

Plant A Tree
Trees are vital. As the biggest plants on the planet, trees give us oxygen, store carbon, stabilise the soil and are natural habitats for many of the world’s wildlife. Check out local organisations that offer the community a chance to donate or plant a tree such as Garden City Fund (Singapore) and Plant My Tree (Germany) to restore nature back into the city.

Eat Climate-Stable Meals
The decisions we make with our food not only affect us, but also the environment. Make a change in your diet and opt for climate-friendly meals such as eating more meatless meals, buying local produce whenever possible to reduce carbon footprint, or even trying your hand at growing your own vegetables.

Make Sustainable Investments
Not all of us have the luxury to install solar panels in our homes but that should not stop us from being part of the clean-energy economy. Speak to your local banks or advisors on sustainable investments. Apart from the financials, sustainable investments consider the social, ethical, and ecological aspects too.

Reduce Your Digital Footprint
Every time we send an email, it has a carbon footprint attached to it. This goes for the WhatsApp messages and the time spent binge-watching on Netflix. That is because energy is needed for all the data we are producing – which is a lot! Shrink your digital footprint by adjusting the power settings on your devices, reduce your searches, or switch to a “green” search engine such as Ecosia that plants trees from online searches.

Start The Conversation
If there’s one thing you can do today, it would be to start the conversation and spread awareness on climate change with families, friends and your wider network. Echoing the words of environmental activist David Suzuki, “In a world of more than seven billion people, each of us is a drop in the bucket. But with enough drops, we can fill any bucket.”
